Self Evaluation


After reading all the evaluations, I have come to realize my strengths and weaknesses. It was evident from most of the peer evaluations that my strength was on the argument (paper) and my weakness was my presentation. According to one student’s comment, “The speaker effectively gained the listener’s agreement on his thesis and ideas. He did a great job in making the listeners a part of the speech.” I have put my best effort into writing this paper by thinking up with the most reasonable three arguments that I can back up with evidence. Furthermore, another student’s comment was based on the effectiveness of my argument, “Seung Woo did most effectively on his examples. By providing examples of KIS students, the audience, who are KIS students, was able to agree with Seung Woo as he presented his speech.” However, one student mentioned a flaw in my arguments, “Although using a counterclaim device is good, in this case, the speaker misused it by making his evidence sound weaker.” Here, I realized that I should be cautious with using counterclaims because it might actually hinder my arguments. My first argument on students staying on campus could have been more effective if it actually included the statistics or some other evidences apart from the illustration of a student at KIS according to fellow classmates. Although my strength was on the written argument portion, after reading detailed comments, there were still flaws with what I intended to persuade the audience.

Clearly, my weakness of this project was the presentation part. I still have problem with talking in front of a crowd. Giving presentations is my greatest fear because I become nervous and my voice shrieks for some sort of reason. According to one student, I have failed to make eye contact with everyone in the classroom, “The speaker should try to eye contact with others more, for he had a tendency to look at his script often.” I could have improved this part by practicing the speech more before hand, but it also had to deal with my nervousness in front of the audience, which would be the most important factor to overcome. Moreover, another student made the same comment with my speech, “He should work harder on eye contacts and speech skills. He surely did make eye contacts but had to look at his paper too often that it often bothered his speech.” I have come to realize that this was my biggest problem after reading several of the same comments. In addition, there was a comment on my monotonous voice of the whole presentation. I thought I had the rise and fall of the speech, but this could have been my own fallacy. After analyzing my weaknesses, I have once again found my biggest weakness of my presentation, and learned that I would have to be confident and know my speech better before giving a speech.
